What is breathwork?

I've got NEWS! I am beyond excited to share that I am now a certified breathwork teacher for individuals, couples, groups, and kids, and I couldn't be more excited to work with you!

If you’re like most people, you might be wondering…

What is breathwork?

The Sanskrit word, pranayama comes from prana, meaning “life energy”, and yama, meaning “control” and is the term used to describe using your breath for self-awareness and healing. You might have heard this word in your yoga class, but how do you use it outside the studio?I came to breathwork by way of a random Google search. I have always been the kind of person who finds myself gasping for air randomly throughout the day. My doctor actually asked me once, “Do you ever breathe?” So I realized that breathing wasn’t something I paid close attention to, and my breaths are often shallow and quick.Interestingly, when I'm running I breathe in a controlled manner so I can access all of the oxygen available, and I started to wonder why I only did that while running and not in my daily life.

I mean, let’s consider some of the benefits proper breathing affords us.

Breath is quite literally life, and using it well brings more oxygen to the brain, which means better cognitive functioning.Mindful breathing also lowers stress, anxiety, insomnia, slows down panic attacks, and supports mental health, respiratory, and cardiovascular health

Breathwork is lifework — your life is bookended by breath. You start and end your life with it. At all times, there is someone taking their first or last breath.

That hit me hard.So I decided to train in breathwork. And let me tell you, when I find something and love it, I jump in and want to learn everything I can about it.

Also, 2020 was deeply traumatic to me and I needed a way to process that pain in my body.

When I started taking classes, I felt my body releasing so much tension and negative energy. I know that sounds a bit woo-woo, but my first session had me in big tears and feeling twenty pounds lighter emotionally. It has removed some of the mental blocks that have held me in a toxic pattern of grief and bitterness for years. It is helping me work through that grief by greasing the emotional wheels in my mind and allowing me to move forward with courage.

Breathwork is just that good.

I have so much to share with you, and I am excited to give you practical strategies for breathing that will support your workday, stress levels, emotional health,  and athletic ability.
